Is it OK to answer your cell phone during dinner?

Is it ok to answer your cell phone during dinner?

I ask this question because there have been so many times when I would be eating with my father or even some friends and y phone would ring and I would always wonder “should I answer it or let it go to voicemail?”

Unless I know it is a dire emergency and am expecting important news then I will answer the call.  But if it is just a regular phone call then I usually leave it alone.

I remember a few years ago, at the dinner table with my family and my sister had received a phone call from one of her friends and she had answered it.  Well that did not sit well with my dad, he just looked at her and said “Is it really necessary to answer the phone while we are eating!”  Let’s just say she got off of the phone very quickly. 🙂

Many believe that although it’s rude to actually answer the phone, it’s fine to check and see who is calling.  Some may feel a discreet glance to their phone as they see it is ringing may be appropriate.  Try putting your phone away for the dinner and not placing it on the table in hindsight.  You can always check your messages when your companion goes to the restroom.

So tell me, is it??? How do you feel on this topic….

If you are dining alone I think it is alright to answer your cell phone, but if you are spending this time with others I think it is rude to answer your phone to talk to someone while the people present are ignored.

I think it’s rude to answer the phone at dinner unless it is an emergency. Our voicemail plays on the speaker phone and if someone needs you to pick up right away, then I think it’s okay. To have a huge conversation about nothing important while everyone is dining is considered very rude.
