Red Velvet Pancakes

Ingredients

Scale

2 cups all-purpose flour

2 teaspoons baking powder

1 teaspoon baking soda

1 teaspoon salt

6 tablespoons granulated sugar

2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder

2 large eggs

11/2 cups buttermilk

1/2 cup sour cream

2 teaspoons red food coloring

4 teaspoons vanilla extract

1/2 cup chocolate chips (doesn’t matter what kind you use)

Instructions

Combine all dry ingredients in a large bowl and set aside.

In a separate bowl, whisk together the egg, buttermilk, sour cream, food coloring and vanilla.

Add wet ingredients to dry, and mix just until combined.

Add chocolate chips and fold in batter.

Pour about 1/3 cup onto medium/high griddle and lightly brown on both sides.

Sprinkle powdered sugar on top and serve with maple syrup.

Enjoy!

    Around 4 servings maybe 6

  18. Shayla says:

Thanks. I made them this weekend and it made 14 pancakes (using 1/3 cup of batter per pancake). The last few were a little small though becuase I wanted to make sure I got 14 becuase that is how many servings I put when calculating the points value. Hope this helps anyone else wanting to know how many pancakes it made.

  20. Mandy says:

My batter turned out super thick. I used wheat flower could that be the cause or is there a trick to make it thinner?

  21. yummy says:

    Mandy,

You could of added milk t the batter to thin it out…

  22. […] sweet with the cocoa batter, chocolate chips and syrup–but they were delicious! I followed this recipe, which yields a lot of pancakes, so you’ll likely have lots of leftovers to enjoy! […]

  23. Melissa says:

Do you need to use white cocoa powder? I don’t see any brown in the dry ingredients picture. I can’t find white cocoa powder (except online) and when I used Hershey’s unsweetened cocoa powder, it came out too brown and didn’t taste quite right.

  24. Addy says:

  26. yummy says:

    Addy,
Yes of course you could. I would really just recommend dividing the wet ingredients together and then the dry together and keep them separated then combine them when your ready. Hope this helps. 🙂

  27. yummy says:

    Melissa,
No it is unsweetened cocoa powder. It should taste the same with a slight cocoa feel to it. You could always just omit the cocoa powder if the taste isn’t what you like. Hope this helps 🙂

  29. Ashley says:

I tried this recipe and followed it exactly… but my batter came out really brown and thick and gooey. (I was expecting them to be pink like the picture) They wouldn’t even cook. By the time they were firm enough to turn over, they were already black. I tried to add milk, turn down the grill even more, but no success no matter what I did. The outside cooked, but the inside was still raw. I’ve made pancakes plenty of times, so its not like I’m completely clueless. I had to throw out the rest of the batter. Extremely disappointed 🙁

  30. yummy says:

    Ashley,
I am so sorry to hear that. I know how disappointing it is to make a recipe your all excited about and then it doesn’t work out. One question how high was your stove on? Did you add the red food coloring, maybe you needed more color. If the batter is too thick you could always add a little milk to thin out. That could of been one of the factors for them browning to quickly and burning. Hope this doesn’t discourage you from making them again.
Hope you have a better day! 🙂

  44. AmyVS says:

These were delicious. I too had a little trouble getting them to cook properly. The first batch looked burned when I flipped them. The second batch I flipped sooner but had a hard time getting them cooked completely. But when we finally ate the first batch I realized they were just dark and not really burned. Adding a touch more milk to thin the batter would probably help a little. I think there is just a slight learning curve to cooking them. Definitely will be making these again and again. Thank you for the recipe. Btw, I found the recipe on Pinterest.

I made these following the recipe exactly but I found that they really did not have a strong red velvet cake flavor? Maybe it’s because I happen to have a really great red velvet cake recipe but when I put syrup on the pancakes they just tasted like regular pancakes. Did anyone else have this issue?
